According to the Health Department of Sao Paulo, the acupuncture, a component of Chinese Traditional Medicine was introduced at public heath centers in the city in 2001. Following the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), Brazil approved in 2006 the "National Policy of Integrative and Complementary Practices" when the acupuncture and other "Complementary Medicine" practices, as defined by WHO, were adopted by the SUS. A survey conducted by the Health Department of the state of Sao Paulo State showed that the number of acupuncture sessions applied in SUS increased nearly seven times in five years. In 2011, 264,400 applications were carried out in the state while in 2007 the number was 39,600. About 110,000 acupuncture sessions were offered in the city of Sao Paulo during 2014.
