FUZHOU, July 22 -- Continuous downpour has toppled nearly 3,000 homes and forced 21,300 people to evacuate in east China's Fujian Province, the local government said Wednesday.

Longyan, a city with 3 million people in the west of Fujian, suffered the most from the rainstorms that hit most parts of the province Tuesday and Wednesday, the provincial flood prevention and drought control office said in a press release.

The average precipitation in Longyan topped 250 mm in the two days. In the worst-plagued Liancheng County, precipitation reached 303 mm, it said.

Rainstorms have affected 128,00 people, damaging their homes and flooding 6,890 hectares of cropland. Direct economic losses are estimated at 764 million yuan (123 million U.S. dollars).

The provincial flood prevention and drought control office has mobilized 300 armed police officers to join relief work in Longyan, delivering relief supplies by speedboats.

The provincial water resource authority has sent a team of specialists to help curb floods, as the weather bureau has forecast continuous rain Wednesday night and Thursday.
