BEIJING, June 23 -- China on Tuesday urged the Philippines and Japan to preserve regional peace and stability instead of building tension.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang made the remarks when asked to comment on the ongoing naval exercises between the two countries.

Lu said what the overwhelming majority of Asian countries care most about is development and China hopes the countries concerned can contribute more to peace and stability in the region.
